EmberShare Terms of Service

Last updated: 6 October 2026

These terms apply when you install or use the EmberShare app. By using it you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the app. How we handle your data is covered separately in our Privacy Policy.

1. Who we are

EmberShare is developed by The Discover Network, a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity No 1193870). Any reference to "we"/"us" below means The Discover Network. You can reach us via the app's own Contact Us screen, or by email (use the app's Contact Us screen, or enable JavaScript to see the address here).

2. What EmberShare is

EmberShare is a media server and file-sharing app. It lets you import files, tag them, share them with other devices directly (a local web server over Wi-Fi or your hotspot, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, or your device's own share sheet), save them to an SD card, and, if you choose, back them up to your own Google Drive account. It runs on your device; we don't provide a hosted service that stores or relays your files.

3. Using the app

EmberShare is free to use. We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on your own devices for as long as you comply with these terms. The app and its content (name, icons, Help text and code) remain ours or our licensors'. Please don't copy, modify, reverse-engineer or redistribute the app, or remove its notices, except where the law allows you to regardless of this term.

4. Your files and what you share

You are responsible for the files you import, serve, send, save and back up with EmberShare. You confirm that you have the right to share them, and you must not use the app to share anything that is illegal, that infringes someone else's copyright or other rights, or that you have no permission to distribute (including material that is abusive or harmful to others, or malware).

We never see your files, and nothing passes through a server we run, so we can't check, remove or restrict what you share. That also means we aren't able to help you recover a file that has been deleted or lost.

5. The local server and other sharing

When you start the server, the files you've chosen to serve can be opened and downloaded by anyone who can reach your device's address on the network you're using (for example everyone on the same Wi-Fi network, or anyone who joins your hotspot) while it is running. The server has no password. Please only serve files you are happy for those people to have, use a network you trust, and stop the server when you've finished (the app can also stop it for you after a time you set).

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct transfers go to the device you pick. Check that you've chosen the right recipient before you send.

6. Cloud backup and Google Drive

Cloud backup is optional and uses your own Google account and Google Drive storage. Your use of Google Drive is governed by Google's terms and policies, not ours, and any storage limits, charges or outages are between you and Google. EmberShare only asks for access to the folder it creates in your Drive (the drive.file scope).

Backup is a convenience and not a guarantee. Keep your own copies of files you can't afford to lose. If you restore from a folder that someone else has shared with you, you are responsible for checking that you're entitled to have and use what's in it, and we can't vouch for it.

7. Contact Us

Please use the Contact Us form for genuine bug reports, feature requests and questions. Don't use it to send spam, abusive messages or anything unlawful. We may block use of the form that looks like abuse. We can't promise to reply to every message or to act on every request.

8. Donations

EmberShare may invite you to support our charity. Donations are voluntary and are made on a separate web page, not inside the app. They don't buy you any feature, upgrade or priority: the app works the same whether or not you donate.

9. Availability, updates and changes

We work to keep EmberShare running well, but we provide it as a free tool and can't promise it will always be available, error free, or work on every device. We may update, change or stop providing the app or any of its features. Some features depend on third parties (such as Google Drive, or your device's Bluetooth and Wi-Fi), which we don't control.

10. Our responsibility to you

EmberShare is provided "as is". We don't give any promise that it will meet your particular needs, and, as far as the law allows, we exclude all conditions and warranties that aren't set out in these terms.

We are not responsible for any loss of files, data or profit howsoever cause, including anyone seeing or downloading files you chose to serve or share, or from a failed or incomplete backup or restore. The app is supplied to you free of charge and your usage is at your own risk.

11. Ending your use

You can stop using EmberShare at any time by uninstalling it; your backups in your own Google Drive stay under your control and can be deleted there. We may suspend or end your access to the app (for example the Contact Us form) if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example if the app changes or the law does. We'll update the "Last updated" date above, and if a change is material we'll tell you in the app or on the app's store listing. If you carry on using EmberShare after a change, you accept the updated terms.
